Nia, by straight definition, is not easily definable. It is a dynamic blend of movement, music, body education and holistic fitness. It balances form and freedom providing ample structure and guidance, in addition to choice and personal interpretation. It is a joyous, liberating, fun experience that has to be experienced to understand fully!
"...Nia is FUN! Nia is deep! Nia is returning home to my body! Nia is play-FULL!..."
The primary teachings of Nia are
influenced by the martial arts, dance, and body-awareness techniques including the work of Moshe Feldenkrais. Movements are
functional and based on the design of the body, making it safe and
accessible for nearly anyone. Music is carefully choreographed and
selected to evoke certain emotional and physiological responses. Music
opens pathways in the body for people to become more attentive to
detail, energy variety, emotional expression, and rhythmic learning. Using a variety of movement dynamics and sensations,
Nia empowers people to achieve physical, mental, emotional and
spiritual well-being and balance.
Where does one find Nia? It can be found in some of the most exotic retreat centers on earth. It also is taught in gyms, attracting people to its non-linear, broad, deep style. Professional dancers, non-dancers, athletes, kids, elderly and men all are attracted to Nia. It is also offered in yoga studios, dance studios, in schools with children, in schools with adults, on the beach, in hospitals, and on. Nia boosts confidence, encourages personal empowerment, improves relational skills and increases mental clarity.
Nia classes blend guided movements with freestyle movements, balancing the two with a central focus. Everyone interprets the moves in their own way, therefore making the experience very personal.
Did we mention we like to have fun?
Since its creation in 1983, Nia has spread worldwide, creating a large, devoted network of teachers, and students. Nia has been ranked as one of the top three mind-body programs in the world, and the founders, Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas, are regularly featured at Sound conferences, Fitness & Wellness conferences, and more.
